Professor John E Davies MRCS D Phys Med FFSEM

A consultant Rheumatologist and Professor in Sports Medicine, Professor John E Davies leads the NHS FMS Clinic at Guys Hospital, London and has been specifically treating Fibromyalgia Syndrome and Myofascial Pain patients for over a decade at his private clinics in London and Bristol. He has seen over a thousand patients at these 3 clinics, plus many, many more in the years before that with what was then known as Fibrositis.

Having qualified at Guy's Hospital London in 1966, a two year internship at Guy's/New Cross Rehabilitation centre provided a wide exposure to, and clinical experience in, musculoskeletal medicine disorders and practical soft tissue injection techniques.

Following some years working as a single handed practitioner together with clinical rheumatology sessions at the local hospital in West Wales, Prof Davies worked for several years as a senior medical advisor in the pharmaceutical industry, whilst continuing clinical sessions at the Guy's Sports Injuries clinic and Guy's Arthritis Research Unit (Guy's ARU). Many papers were published, not only with pharmaceutical research, but also with Guy's ARU and Sport's Injury Clinic. A community based local soft tissue injection project was also undertaken with local South London GPs in conjunction with the Guy's Department of General Practice.

Prof Davies' appointment as NHS Consultant in Sports Medicine and Rheumatology at Guy's Hospital, and the formation of a private practice focusing on soft tissue trigger point injections and techniques in Fibrositis, coincided with the nomenclature Fibromyalgia being recognised by the American College of Rheumatology.

During the last decade, Prof Davies' extensive clinical experience has been attained with exposure to patients suffering with Fibromyalgia Syndrome, and treatments with trigger point injections and various medications for the relief of pain and sleep disturbance. The treatments used are based on evidence-based medicine, whereby the drugs considered for prescribing have been subjected to placebo controlled double blind trials.

In 2005, a weekly NHS Fibromyalgia Clinic was set up in the Rheumatology Department at Guy's Hospital. To date several clinical trials have been undertaken, the results of which will be published in the near future.
